Wyvern A Dragon Shifter Novella eBook Grace Draven Lora Gasway
Just finished reading Wyvern by Grace Draven and though it ended as expected, I do admit to feeling a bit melancholy after reading this novella.Non specific spoilers below...
I guess my feeling mostly stems from the fact that while Wyverns live for a very long time (600 years is prime age), obviously humans live a fraction of that...so it's highly possible that our heroine will be one of very many. This, followed by the inability of Wyverns to create a child with their human partner, just seems as though our heroine Elspeth is a bit on the bittersweet end of this relationship. To love someone and know that he can father only children of his own kind (and he will while he is with you) and that you will only have him for a short length of his life, just feels like a sad story to me. Like you will just be a blip in his long life and he won't really have much to remember you by.
I don't know if this feeling makes sense but it is what I feel and while the romance has its sweet moments, I personally feel that Alaric would have been a great choice for a lover but not really someone you'd want to spend your life with...the uncertainty, you know? Plus the fact that they don't grow old (the way humans do) and that she will, makes this even more temporal.
I guess the moral of the story is that love is blind...Either way, this is an easy read and I would still recommend it just because it is by Ms. Draven. You just have to stop noticing the same things I did or to not ask the same questions and just enjoy it for what it is- a fantastical short story.

Wyvern A Dragon Shifter Novella eBook Grace Draven Lora Gasway Reviews
I really like Grace Draven's work, but this one's weak. The mystery identity is obvious, the peril is fleeting and easily resolved, and none of the characters (aside from Irena) are particularly memorable--in short, there's just not that much happening in this story. Well written of course, like all Draven's stories, but otherwise just okay.
It's no Master of Crows, but still a pretty good book. I liked the storyline, but I still wonder what's happening at the end. Spoiler alert.... So they end up together, but she doesn't have an extended life expectancy so is she going to keep getting old and then die and he keeps living? Will he continue to mate with random other wyverns every other year while they're together? These are minor things, but are still issues I have with the story. I want a 100% happy ending with all these loose ends tied up. Oh well.
As a side note, I'm somewhat amused that the title is Wyvern A Dragon Shifter Novella when a wyvern isn't a dragon strictly speaking and Alaric is anti-dragon. Oh well!
I really enjoy Grace Draven's writing. She has a wonderful voice, and every story of hers that I've read has kept me fully engaged and interested from beginning to end.
Wyvern has a woman meeting up with her long-lost lover, although she is at first unaware it is him. She is surprisingly unable to connect the dots herself despite some obvious clues, but I guess it would be a huge stretch of the human mind to accept that your former love was actually a wyvern in disguise. Once she finds out, she accepts the situation very easily, and they start right back where the left off.
All of this flows a little too easily for me, but the characters are lovely and the story is very smooth. I enjoyed it.
A sweet and sexy love story. Grace Draven never disappoints! Beautiful, flowing prose and likeable characters. Being close to family myself, I completely understand Beth's devotion to her grandfather. I'm generally not a big fan of shapeshifters, but I loved the wyvern lore in this novella. And a happy ending (or bittersweet, depending on how you look at it). Only wish this was written as a full fledged novel instead of a novella...I love Beth and Alaric as a couple.
Have been a fan of Ms. Draven's works ever since picking up Radiance, and will continue to look out for her future titles.
It never even occurred to me (before reading a few other reviews) to feel sad about or disappointed in this story. The writing is so well done, the descriptions so masterful, the emotions so poignant, that I was swept away by this beautiful tale and never even thought to ruin it by overthinking the details and dynamics that would be involved in a human/wyvern relationship.
And now that I am thinking about it, I'm still not bothered by how the story unfolded or ended. Listen, Grace Draven's stories are not your traditional "fairy tales" where a virginal princess meets the perfect guy who's not only obscenely rich but also willing to slay dragons/change their personality/defy their parents and royal obligations in the name of true and immediate love.
Her characters have grit, they've been around, they've seen some *stuff*. So, however many years Elsbeth has with Alaric is better than no time at all with him. Who wouldn't trade 50 years with the wrong guy for even 50 minutes with the right one? C'mon.
Neither the length of this story nor its outcome bothered me at all. Surprisingly, I'd never read a romantic piece where the main characters had met before and were (unknowingly to at least one of them) reacquainting, but I found that I enjoyed that particular dynamic quite a lot.
As always, well done, Ms. Draven. Well done, indeed.
At almost three in the morning I am writing this review because once again Grace Draven has out done herself. Yes this is a reprint, (is it still called that when it's a digital format) but the story telling is beautiful. Flawlessly pulling the reader into Beth's and Alaric's world.
It's testament to Grace Draven's attention to detail and to her wonderful storytelling talent that she can immerse us so thoroughly in her writing. Do yourselves a favor. Start here and then go snap up the rest of her library.
Yes I know I sound like a gushing fangirl, I am a gushing fangirl but I am also a discerning reader and Grace Draven never fails me. Go, buy, read, and enjoy.
