Maximum Carnage is an epic 14-part crossover between four different Spider-man comics as serial killer Carnage has escaped from a mental institution along with the psychic villain Shriek and they quickly gather some of the darkest characters in New York City to run a murderous rampage and it's up to Spidey and his own team (which includes his frienemy Venom along with a host of others.)There are a lot of fair criticisms of the story: It's way too long and there are many parts where the story doesn't move. Mary Jane Watson is portrayed very poorly throughout most of the book. Spider-man had planned to take a one week break and Mary Jane is furious that he let a little thing like one of his most murderous rivals going on a killing spree that seems to be inspiring more violence from the populace. It's portrayals like that which have let to most of the attacks on the marriage. In addition, the story is a lot of action schlock.
However, what makes it work is that it's enjoyable action schlock. Unlike most big crossovers which frontload all the characters. This introduces them over time, and the length of the story allows for some great entrances that just bring a smile to my face. It's like boom, now Iron Fist here and then boom...here's Captain America. It's got this sense of pure fun even if it deals with the grimness of Carnage.
There's also a dilemma. Is the threat of Carnage so severe that the ends justify the means and that Peter and friends have to surrender (to a small degree) to the darkness. Eight years before DC asked the question in, "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?," you get those questions asked here. The answers aren't complex, but then again, the answers in life aren't complicated, just difficult.
Even Mary Jane's unsupportiveness serves to highlight how critical her support it, particularly when her true character shines through at the end.
Bottom line: Maximum Carnage is a story back when Marvel Comics (at least on the Spider-man titles) had a soul. It was before the utter betrayal of the Spider-man and Mary Jane in "One More Day," and the dark cloud of cynicism that swept the company after, "Civil War." This is a good old-fashioned Superhero story, good guys vs. bad guys. It's not great, but it's good at what it does and it's definitely worth a read.

SpiderMan Maximum Carnage Tom Defalco Terry Kavanagh JM DeMatteis David Michelinie Books Reviews
Nice item
The people on here that gave this a low rating, siting that the story is lack luster; yes, the story is not the most ground-breaking but this is Carnage. What does Carnage do? He murders and finds other ways to break the law. Why does this story seem to repeat over 14 issues? Because Carnage will forever be locked in a battle with Spider-Man and Venom. If you like Carnage, get the book or download the digital copy, it's worth it if you appreciate the characters.
This is a classic for any Marvel or Spider-Man fan. Great art, great story, and characters do some cool things in it.
Could have been so much better, but they filled the story with too many secondary characters. At some points it feels like a Cloak and Dagger story with a guest appearance from Spider-Man. Still a good read, though.
I got this comic out of sheer luck, and I have to say, it took me by surprise. I've read plenty of Spidey comics over the years yet I had never read anything related to Carnage. So this is my first hands on read of the red symbiotic alien lifeform.
Me personally I was always into Venom as an anti-hero. So he over shadowed my judgement of Carnage.
Now this is the first of the Spider comics that his main antagonist goes on a city-wide killing spree, becoming so bad Venom has to join forces with him and as well as several other heroes to bring him down and even then it was hardly enough.
Definitely an awesome story from Marvel and can't to try out some other Carnage reads!
I remembered this story from playing the video game of the same name on Sega as a kid; the team up on both sides (heroes and villains) is what appealed to me about it. The story itself also sees Peter Parker, in the face of such violence, question the direction of his own moral compass, both as himself and as Spider-Man. Venom plays an admirable supporting role, while Carnage does everything in his considerable power to live up to his name. The subplot revolving around Cloak and Dagger is also intriguing. Overall, a solid book with great storytelling and illustration.
I was into X titles and the Avengers titles in the 90s, it was my brother who collected Spidey titles. However, this one caught my eye as it had Firestar( New warriors fan!) and also Captain America. Cloak and Dagger were also favorites of mine, though at the time they didn’t have a series.
The 14 part series is a great read! Venom working as an anti-hero was the highlight of the storyline. Also really enjoyed all of the moral and ethical perspectives in the series. Plenty of action and fight scenes also. One of the best parts was when Venom decided to go and kill Carnage and took several heroes with him. Spidey stood his ground and vowed not to kill having several characters on his side. Don’t want to ruin the surprise, but a hero shockingly chooses Venom’s side.
I read it over and over as a kid, and as an adult purchased this for my own collection.
